The electric arc standard

Publié le 28 November 2014

The standard IEC 61482 specifies requirements and test methods applicable to materials and garments for protective clothing for electrical workers against the thermal hazard s of an electric arc.

The risks related to electric arc are the following ones:

  • Third-degree burn
  • Damaging, loss of audition
  • Degradation of respiratory route
  • Eye injuries

The performance of the garment can be qualified by:

–        The arc thermal performance values (ATPV or EBT50) measured according the standard IEC 61482-1-1 (test with open electric arc). In that case, we obtain a value in cal/cm², 1 cal/cm² is equivalent to the exposure of a lighter flame on a finger during 1 second.

–        The arc protection class of materials and garments according the standard IEC 61482-1-2 (test with directed and constrained electric arc). In that case, we obtain a classification of 1 or 2 relative to the thermic resistance to the arc with an intensity of 4 or 7 kA.

The protective clothing do not constitute alone a sufficient protection and have to be associated to other protective equipment (gloves, helmet …). They are not in any case insulating garments.

*ATPV = Arc Thermal Performance Value
